PERFORMANCES AT FUND RAISING CONCERTS
FOR THE CITY LIT MUSIC DEPARTMENT
St Paul's Church, Covent Garden, London
June 2014 and February 2015
I was privileged to be one of around 20 students from the City Lit, London, performing in a concert of French piano music to a church full of listeners in June 2014. I played two Messiaen Preludes, La Colombe and Plainte Calme.
Other students gave enjoyable performances of Debussy Preludes and pieces by other French composers including Faure and Ravel.
It was a great opportunity to share my enjoyment of the music with an attentive audience, and also to empathise with the feelings of my students performing in piano exams and end of year piano concerts. I managed to overcome a racing, thumping heartbeat and thoughts of "shall I just run away now while nobody is looking" and "I'm going to make a complete hash of it" by doing some mindfulness and breathing exercises, and thinking "well, everyone else is managing well, so why shouldn't I be ok too". After the first ten seconds I relaxed and felt as if I was playing to friends at home, and can honestly say I enjoyed playing for everyone.
I enjoyed playing at St Paul's Church again in February 2015, this time presenting sonatas by Scarlatti and Bach.
The City Lit is a marvellous adult education facility in London, with very high standards of tuition across many disciplines, and a friendly atmosphere.
